CODA (an acronym for Children of Deaf Adults) is a new film about Ruby (played by Emilia Jones), who is a child of deaf parents (played by Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur). Ruby is a high school student who also works in her family’s fishing business. As she discovers her talent for singing, her desire to attend a top music school conflicts with her loyalty to her family. This heartwarming coming-coming-of-age film has received good reviews and  won four awards at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, including the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. The film sold for$25 million, the highest price ever paid for a Sundance film Released on August 13, the film is available on AppleTV+.

CODA is also available in a limited number of theaters. It’s the first feature-length movie to have burn-in captions, allowing deaf moviegoers to enjoy the film without special equipment. “It is historic. It is huge for all us,” said Daniel Durant, a deaf actor who plays son Leo. “This is a day we have waited to see for so many years.”
