ASDC is supporting the “Stamp for Laurent” project, a campaign to have the United States Postal Service issue an official commemorative stamp in honor of Laurent Clerc, the most renown Deaf person in American history.
Laurent was a teacher at a school for the Deaf in Paris. He met Thomas Gallaudet who was visiting France to learn about deaf education practices there. Gallaudet became a student at the school and soon convinced Laurent to come to America. On the long journey by boat, Laurent continued to teach Gallaudet sign language and in turn, Gallaudet taught Laurent English. Together they created the first school for the deaf in North America!
