About Signed By Stories:

Signed By Stories (SBS) is a deaf mental health awareness, education, and advocacy platform for deaf, deafblind, late-deafened, and deaf-disabled people.

The mission of Signed By Stories is to advocate for the provision of culturally competent and affirmative mental health services for all deaf people. Signed By Stories serves as a community for the sharing of experiences directly from those who have encountered challenges while reaching out for mental health support in a hearing world.

These stories highlight the need to bring attention to the disparities in mental health services available to deaf people and those available to hearing people. Also, they amplify the lived experiences and communication needs of intersectional deaf groups, which comprise many accounts of oppression due to communication and language access barriers.

Through the sharing of these stories, Signed By Stories hopes to provide education about the harmful outcomes of mental health services that do not facilitate sign language and otherwise optimal communication for deaf people. These stories are paired with data, facts, and insights from deaf researchers and experts on mental health and deaf people, to underscore these needs. Signed By Stories accounts can be found on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
