Como padres latinos, es nuestra naturaleza proteger y cuidar a nuestros hijos, especialmente cuando hay una “discapacidad” involucrada. Es importante que aprendamos a ver la pérdida auditiva de nuestros hijos como un desafío en lugar de una discapacidad. Esta es la única manera en que podemos alentar a nuestros hijos a tener autodeterminación a una edad temprana. Esto les ayudará a vivir una vida exitosa siendo independientes, sabiendo cómo tomar decisiones informadas y al mismo tiempo convertirse en individuos responsables.

As Latino parents, it is our nature to protect and care for our children, especially when there is a “disability” involved. It is important that we learn to view our children’s hearing loss as a challenge rather than a disability. This is the only way we can encourage our children to have self-determination at a young age. This will help them live a successful life by being independent, knowing how to make informed decisions, and at the same time becoming responsible individuals.
