🎉🤟 Happy National ASL Day! 🤟🎉
Today, April 15th, marks National ASL Day—a time to celebrate the rich history and vibrant culture of American Sign Language (ASL)!
In 1817, the American School for the Deaf (ASD) opened its doors in Hartford, Connecticut, laying the foundation for ASL. Through collaboration among teachers and students, ASL emerged from a blend of Native American Signs, French Sign Language, and Martha’s Vineyard Sign Language.
Since then, ASL has spread far and wide. From its roots in the United States, it has journeyed across borders, becoming prevalent in Canada and beyond, reaching communities in Central Africa, West Africa, and Southeast Asia.
Here are some exciting ways to celebrate National ASL Day at work or school:
- Learn and Share: Teach your classmates or coworkers some basic ASL words and phrases, fostering inclusivity and understanding.
- Create ASL Day Cards: Craft special cards featuring ASL signs for friends, teachers, employees, or clients, spreading awareness and appreciation.
- Discover ASL Stories and Songs: Explore YouTube for ASL interpretations of your favorite songs. ASDC’s YouTube channel and ASL Stories Directory offer a wealth of stories and songs in sign language.
- Volunteer for Deaf/HH Organizations: Engage with your community by discussing opportunities to volunteer with local projects supporting Deaf and hard-of-hearing organizations.
- Share Your Story: If ASL is part of your daily life or someone you know, seize the chance to share your experiences and insights, promoting awareness and understanding.
- Spread the Word: Download and share Deaf-friendly flyers and posters to show support for ASL-friendly communities and classrooms. Don’t forget to thank your peers for their commitment to inclusivity!
